Security options for offices, new or old

Keep a secure office

How safe are the things in your office? We use locks and keys so routinely, that we hardly consider how important they are. We come and go and take for granted that our locks keep us safe. But when you think of computers, machines, important papers – and employees – that are protected, you should realize that your office security is of utmost importance.

Whether you are starting a new business, moving to a new office building, or simply wondering if your system is up to date, reassessing your security is a good idea. Adequate lighting, emergency alarms, sprinkler systems, and surveillance cameras are all important considerations.

But the actual locking systems are the most basic considerations. Here are some types of business security options to consider:

  • Master key system – A master key system is most often used in apartment buildings for emergencies. But master keys are also used in businesses for maintenance workers and night watchmen. A master key opens a number of locks or types of locks. You can have a system with a master key hierarchy, in which one master key opens every lock and others unlock sets of locks.
  • E-card system - These systems are used most commonly in hotels and clubs. Programmable swipe-card keys work with mortise and cylindrical locks. They’re good for offices, too, because of their level of security. Duplicating these keys requires a higher level of sophistication than with more traditional keys and a programmable database means you rarely have to replace locks.
  • Panic bars – If you are in a large building with a lot of doors, panic bars are often required under certain building codes. A panic bar is a bar that unlatches a forward-opening door during an emergency, such as a fire.

Special items need special protection

  • Wall-mounted locks – These are used for small safes for small items or other keys. They are usually installed at the time of construction but can be installed in existing buildings.
  • Office safes - There are a wide variety of safes for offices, and the security grade for you should naturally correspond to the importance of the items you're protecting.

The keys to my office went missing, just disappeared last night. I was so frustrated, besides for being embarrassed in front of my employees, I also didn’t want to lose money due to the delay. I called for a locksmith and Justin came over straight away, he suggested re-keying the lock, in case my keys were stolen, I thought this was a great idea, and that’s what we did, he then made new keys for me on the spot.
