How to Install a Lock on a Patio Door or Sliding Glass Door

Installing Sliding Glass Door Locks

Patio door locks are a great way to give you some extra security in the house.  Sliding glass doors are usually lockable from the inside and though they are typically not used as regular entry doors you may decide to use your sliding glass door as a regular entry point.  If so, that will require you in installing a key lock so the door can be unlocked from the outside. A key lock can also be installed on the inside of the door for adding security against intruders or to keep small children from opening the door. If you have the time and patience to do so yourself you won’t need a locksmith near you and sometimes it can be expensive depending on the door and lock. Here are some tips and instructions on adding it yourself.

The things you will need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Drill bits
  • Electric drill
  • Soap and water
  • Metal punch

Making sure the door frame is clean, decide and mark exactly where you want your lock to be installed, this can be done by closing the door first. Make sure you pick a spot that will clear the glass and the door rolling gear.

Make sure the lock is unlocked and place it on the mainframe of the door 2.5mm from the face of the sliding frame. After marking, drill the holes for securing the lock to the frame.

Place the metal punch over the door frame that you are working with and make a hole. At this point, you will want to make sure the lock is secure by adding durable screws.

With the door closed, push the end of the bolt to mark the center of the hole to be drilled in the sliding door frame.

Once all the previous steps are completed, you can now begin to make sure that you fit the lock correctly and that both sides are matched up. Once this step is complete, you should test out your patio door lock to make sure it is functioning optimally.

When buying the lock look for the locks specially designed for sliding glass doors because they have fewer movable parts and the correct size for the door frame. For extra security, fit a lock at the top and the bottom of the door. A licensed locksmith will be able to secure the property and repair any damage done and offer you a reasonable locksmith price with a guarantee.

The keys to my office went missing, just disappeared last night. I was so frustrated, besides for being embarrassed in front of my employees, I also didn’t want to lose money due to the delay. I called for a locksmith and Justin came over straight away, he suggested re-keying the lock, in case my keys were stolen, I thought this was a great idea, and that’s what we did, he then made new keys for me on the spot.
